Family beginnings

George A. Hormel married Lillian Gleason in 1892. Upon their retirement in 1927, they donated their beautiful home to the Austin YWCA.
The Hormel brand is proud to be one of the original brands developed by Geo. A. Hormel & Company, founded by George A. Hormel, which later became Hormel Foods Corporation. George eventually handed over leadership of the company to his son, Jay C. Hormel.
Working for the greater good
Jay developed many of the company’s most popular products and furthered the company’s commitment to giving back which remains a cornerstone of Hormel Foods’ philosophy today.
Together, Jay and his father created the Hormel Foundation, to benefit the local community where Hormel Foods is based. Jay also worked with the University of Minnesota to create The Hormel Institute an internationally renown research center currently focused on cancer prevention and control. One of The Hormel Institute‘s milestone accomplishments was the discovery and naming of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.
